POLICE are urging the public to remain vigilant of an ongoing postal scam in the run-up to Christmas.

A company called Parcel Delivery Service is currently targeting homes across the UK by issuing false calling cards. The card informs residents that they have missed collection of a parcel and provides a premium rate number to call to arrange retrieval. It asks you to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a Premium rate number).

DO NOT call this number. This is a mail scam originating from Belize. If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £315 for the phone call.

Royal Mail and Trading Standards are now investigating the origin of the scam.If you receive a calling card from this company please contact the Royal Mail Fraud Department on 020 7239 6655. If you have been a victim of this scam, you should contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or by visiting their website at http://www.actionfraud.org.uk

A police spokesman said: "With the holiday season approaching, members of the public across Britain will be awaiting parcels in the post. Those responsible for this scam are attempting to profit from this and it is important people are made aware of it so they can avoid becoming a victim."
