Plans to extend the daily opening hours of Household Waste Recycling Centres in Brixworth and Daventry have been welcomed by Daventry District Council.

The proposals form part of a series of changes being introduced by Northamptonshire County Council, which manages the centres countywide, as part of a new 15-year service contract beginning on April 1. The majority of changes to the service at each Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) will be introduced from June 21 onwards.

In Daventry District, the changes will mean longer daily opening hours at the HWRC centres in Browns Lane, Daventry and Scaldwell Road, Brixworth – 8am to 8pm from April to September and from 8am to 6pm from October to March. The Daventry centre will remain open seven days a week and Brixworth will be open for five days, closing on Wednesdays and Thursdays when there is less demand for the service at this site.

Both centres will have a ‘meet and greet service’ - an appointed person on site who will direct, advise and inform customers upon arrival. Shops dedicated to the selling of reusable items brought in to the centres will continue at new off-site locations yet to be confirmed by the county council. However residents will still be able to drop off their items for reuse at the HWRCs but the actual sale of the items will occur at the new off-centre shops.

Under the new contract more materials will also be recycled at the centres – another move welcomed by DDC.

Councillor Catherine Boardman, Daventry District Council’s Environment Portfolio Holder, said: “Diverting more waste from landfill is a common goal for all councils in Northamptonshire and we are encouraged that this is reflected in these changes proposed by the county council.

“The extended hours on each day of opening will certainly be a benefit to people unable to use these centres during the traditional working day, particularly during the summer months. We have been assured that the shops will continue off-site with more space for the sale of reusable goods and residents can carry on dropping off their items at the centres.

“The waste and recycling centres are in addition to a wide range of recycling opportunities already on offer to householders in our district. Daventry District Council provides weekly kerbside collections of items such as cans, glass, plastic and paper, fortnightly collections of garden waste as well as collections for clothing and bulky waste such furniture and white goods.”
